The high demand for certified organic products shows how important this trend towards rethinking is. For many customers, organic has become a way of life. On this journey we want to accompany you with a cup of good tea.

Currently, you will find almost 100 organic teas in our catalogue assortment, including many classic black and green teas, but also a wide range of aromatic herbal, rooibos and fruit tea blends. In addition, we of course also develop customer-specific blends in organic quality in all cut sizes. When developing new teas, we now also focus on the requirements of the new EU Organic Regulation as well as focusing on the balanced taste and attractive appearance.

What are the changes of the EU Organic Regulation as of 2021?

The EU is also intensively concentrated on the organic concept and will put a new EU organic regulation into force as of January 1st, 2021 which also will have an impact on our industry, or rather already has. However, we would not be your competent and innovative partner if we had not already taken up this new challenge to present you solutions. Our expert Annett Schmelling-Petschler from the quality assurance department at Wollenhaupt will explain everything you need to know about the effects of the EU Organic Regulation. We have enquired:

”MRS. SCHMELLING-PETSCHLER, REGARDING THE NEW ORGANIC REGULATION – TO WHAT EXTENT WILL FLAVOURED ORGANIC TEAS CHANGE?”

A. Schmelling-Petschler: ”With the new organic regulation, the possibilities of tea flavouring will change, as only organic flavours, natural oils and extracts can be used by then. This partly limits the range of taste varieties, since large quantities of certain fruits are often required to obtain a natural aroma, as is the case with strawberries, peaches and some other fruits. This is also strongly reflected in the prices of these flavours. However, there are many excellent organic oils and extracts, e.g. made from citrus fruits, which are ideally suited to be used in organic tea blends and which we have already often used.“ ”WHICH FLAVOURS WILL REMAIN?“ A.Schmelling-Petschler: ”Currently, we are able to reproduce approx. 80-90 % of all flavours for future organic tea blends. Popular flavours such as orange, lemon, bergamot, mint, camomile, apple, but also spicy notes such as aniseed, liquorice, fennel, ginger, cocoa, coconut and many more, do not present any technical difficulties. The exceptions are some yellow or exotic fruits, such as peach, pomegranate and apricot.“

”WILL I HAVE TO GIVE UP THOSE TEAS IN FUTURE OR ARE THERE ANY ALTERNATIVES?“

A. Schmelling-Petschler: ”There are some tea blends in our assortment which may no longer be declared as organic teas from 2021 onwards due to the changed regulations and which we cannot replace one to one. Since these teas are convincing in taste and very popular, they will be offered as ”controlled quality“ in future, i.e. approx. 95 % organic ingredients and the familiar taste - but without the organic seal.“

”ARE THE ORGANIC TEAS OF THE CURRENT CATALOGUE ALSO AVAILABEL AS ORGANIC TEAS IN 2021?“

A. Schmelling-Petschler: ”Yes, we have paid special attention to that. We already changed our organic range at an earlier stage so to meet the requirements that will apply from 1st, January 2021. At present it is still unclear whether the implementing regulation will be approved through the EU by summer 2020. The teas that may no longer be certified as organic from 1st, January 2021 are marked accordingly. Until the end of the year, however, our customers may of course offer them as organic teas.”

”DOES THE NEW ORGANIC REGULATION MAKE ORGANIC TEAS GENERALLY MORE EXPENSIVE?”

A. Schmelling-Petschler: ”In individual cases, it may be that the new flavours, some of which are much more expensive, require a slight increase in price. Overall, the prices for our organic tea blends will remain unchanged.”

Our product development has done a great job in creating new aromatic organic tea blends, convince yourself.
